best in show redeux

my thoughts on by far the most interesting part of a ho-hum ceremony...

i mean really, the show stopper for me was anne hathaway in marchesa. if i had coloring like hers i would stay pale and wear red all the time. another presenter, penelope cruz, looked amazing in chanel.

ooh, and more marchesa. i know this is very similar to the anne hathaway red, but how good does jessica alba look? and i'm not really a fan of hers. but she gets points for rocking this one while pregnant. seriously, she looks as good in it as the presumably stick thin runway model.

i love the relative sublety of calista's vintage valentino. she's not there as a nominee or a recipient, just on the arm of harrison ford and not trying to be anything more. well done.

black wouldn't be my choice for such a night but laura linney does look elegant in michael kors and cathy waterman jewels.

why were so many people down on cate blanchett's choice? love the color, her hair and makeup is gorgeous and she's sooo pregnant. let the woman wear whatever cut she wants! big snaps in my book.

the last sitting

check out lindsay lohan on this week's new york magazine cover as marylin monroe. the cover story, shot by bert stern, is based on stern's iconic last sitting from 1962, featuring marylin. surely much will be made of li-lo and her personal parallells to marylin's drug abuse story. whatever.

anyway, i have long been a fan of the book which shows an amazing range of emotion in the star, shot over several boozy sessions just prior to her suicide.

probably this is my favorite image, which i first saw on a friend's wall years ago and has made a lasting impression of the woman behind all that legend.

and as for the rest of the photos, it's easier for those of us in a (slightly) later generation to see what all the hype was about, and why so many stars today refer to her.

window shopping

it's valentine's week on bleeker street and i just had to try to capture the lovely windows at marc jacobs. i don't think the detail totally comes across in the pics but these are full on walls of (silk) flowers, happily carrying over to each of marc's now 4 local stores.

which sit just down the block from the mail boxes at juicy and tommy hilfiger's rather stately pink wooden accents...

happy valentines window-or-other shopping!

japanese fabrics at purl

for any lover of fabrics, purl is a must-shop when in new york. fortunately, the little store is so close to my apartment that i can stop in and do whatever you do with your local stores -- buy things you didn't realize you needed. one of the first purchases i made was this bird fabric that turned in to a curtain for a closet with no door.

ah, and now i see the etsuko furuya upholstery weight line is getting bigger, happily in the same color family with some logical options for curtains and pillows:

away from the heavier weights, purl carries a line of super-soft cotton fabrics, kokka nani iro. the watercolor-like prints don't show nearly as well here as they do in person. suffice to say, this top pattern made the lovliest napkins for my friend elizabeth's birthday.

no idea what i am doing with these two, my recent purchases. the top one looks so valentine-sey. i may have to do cocktail napkins for holly's girls' party that night.
